SARS introduces more rigorous verification process for VAT registrations

SARS has recently identified a concerning trend of dubious registrations among VAT vendors. Due to escalating potential for fraud relating to VAT registrations, on 11 May 2023 SARS announced the following to be implemented with immediate effect:

  • All new applications for VAT registration will undergo a more rigorous verification process, which may involve applicants personally presenting themselves at the nearest SARS branch for validation and accreditation.
  • If a branch visit is required, it is essential to pre-book an appointment through the SARS website by clicking on the “Book an Appointment” icon.
  • All supporting documents for registration validation must be submitted at the branch on the scheduled appointment day.
  • VAT registration will only be finalized once SARS is satisfied with the lawful application.

SARS is fully prepared to pursue criminal charges against offenders.
